Brian Waters Doesn’t Show, Joseph Addai Doesn’t Make the Cut

Joseph Addai did not last long as Patriots training camp kicked off Thursday

Plenty to report after day 1 of Patriots training camp. Some early headlines were the absence of 35 year old guard Brian Waters and the cutting of running back Joseph Addai.

When I first heard of Addai being cut on Thursday I was a little upset since I had some hopes the 29 year old veteran could help contribute in the Patriots backfield. Addai has had an injury-plagued career, but when the Patriots signed Addai back in May he seemed as healthy as he had been in years. This was not the case.

After hearing more reports out of the Pats camp, it seems as though Addai had been struggling with his conditioning test, when all of the sudden he quit right in the middle of it.

The Patriots cut him shortly after.

Coach Belicheck had some interesting words on the matter, when in regards to Addai being cut he responded, “It didn’t work out.” Can’t expect much more from The Genius.

The other big headline, the absence of Waters, was not as surprising to me as to some others. Nobody out of Patriots camp is saying much about it, which leads me to believe that they are just allowing the 6 time pro bowler to take a week or two more off. It could be a case where the Patriots know what they can get out of Waters, and do not want to cause any problems with any of the other Patriot veterans not getting this same treatment.

Giving Waters some extra time before reporting to camp should not be a problem, seeing as how the Patriots signed him on September 4th last season, only days before the first game of the regular season, in which he started. Waters went on to have another Pro-Bowl season, and was on the field for more offensive snaps than anyone on the team except Brady.

I can’t see Waters signing a two year deal last season, having one of the best seasons of his career, making it to the Super Bowl, and deciding to call it quits. I think this was planned out and Waters will be at camp at some point

Hopefully this is the case with Waters. We will keep a close eye on him as this seems to be one of the bigger headlines of training camp.
