West breaks wrist
The Celtics may have found a way to come away with a win on Wednesday night, but it has cost them dearly.
At the end of the first half of the Boston Celtics game against the New Jersey Nets in Boston, Celtics guard Delonte West drove to the basket and went in hard for the left handed layup. He got hit and fell hard to the floor. He tried to break his fall with his right wrist and I immediately said “oh no”. The second he hit the floor, Delonte West screamed in pain and everyone in the arena and watching on TV knew something was wrong. Hell, he screamed so loudly that people outside the Garden knew something was wrong. It sounded and looked incredibly painful. He immediately went to the locker room as the Celtics and their fans awaited the ruling on the injury.
We got it all right. The Boston Celtics announced that Delonte West suffered a broken wrist.
It’s a shitty situation for Delonte West. He had already missed the first 10 games of the season with a suspension from his “Desperado”-esque actions in Maryland last year. He had just started working his way back into the permanent rotation. Some wondered why Delonte was not starting at point guard during the games that Rondo has missed. It was simply because that Delonte wasn’t ready yet. At the same time, Delonte was looking better and more comfortable in the system and in the rotation. Now, he’s going to miss another month and a half of basketball. You must wonder how he will play when he finally gets back on the floor.
This also is tough for the Celtics. Delonte West opened up so many line-up options for the Boston Celtics. Now, the team has to learn to play without a true backup point guard, just like they did in the beginning of the season. Sure, they played well to start the season, but not having a back-up point guard, especially if Rondo is going to continue to miss time, is going to be a huge blow for the Boston Celtics. Nate Robinson has never been a true point-guard. Delonte was that, and now the Celtics won’t have that option.
I hope Delonte West recovers sooner rather than later. The Celtics need him back in the rotation and the Celtics fans want to see him back on the floor doing what he does best in Celtics green.
