Surprise, Mankins ready to sit out the season

Mankins is prepared to sit out

As much as Dan Connolly has been impressing this pre-season, I still have to remind myself that it is pre-season football and Connolly will never be the same caliber left guard that Logan Mankins is. So hearing the news from ESPN’s Mike Riess that Mankins is ready to sit out the season isn’t exactly the news I wanted to hear today.

The Boston Herald, citing friends of the player, reported that Mankins, who has skipped all of the Patriots’ offseason workouts, has saved most of the $7 million he has earned in his five years in the NFL and thus would not feel the financial pressure to end his holdout.

Hold on a second. Let me bang my head against my desk.

Okay done. Honestly, can’t say I’m surprised to hear this news. Logan Mankins wants a new contract, and he knows that he is one injury away from being out of football just like every other offensive lineman. Can you blame the guy for wanting to get paid? In fact, we should be praising the intelligence of Logan Mankins. Unlike a bunch of other athletes, he’s put his money away ($7million!!!!) and is probably set for the next three years. Guy just wants to be set for life.  He deserves the money and the Patriots should pay him, pay Brady and put all the off-field issues away for the rest of the year. Do the Patriots honestly put a lot of stock into Dan Connolly?

Actually, don’t answer that. It’s the Patriots, they probably do.
