Bobby Valentine is the new manager

Posted 2011/11/30 By Benti

The new manager of the Boston Red Sox in a fantastic disguise

In a move that came as a complete surprise (haha, I crack myself up with that one) the Boston Red Sox hired Bobby Valentine as their new manager.

He’s 581-605 for his career with one pennant run. He also had a run of success in the Japan league.

I’m pretty much indifferent about this. I understand the move from the Red Sox staff. They go from an “anything goes” style manager in Terry Francona to one that stresses discipline and structure. He’s demanding while Francona let players police themselves.

At this point, I’m more interested in what Cherrington is going to do to the team than who he was going to hire as Manager.

Bill Simmons’ Grantland Network has it’s own podcast and today on Jonah Keri’s podcast he featured Boston Bruins play-by-play announcer Jack Edwards on the podcast today. They talk, among other things, the Roman Hamerlik “Get Up” call, diving in sports, and the Lucic hit on Miller.

Bobby Ryan on the trading block?

Posted 2011/11/29 By Benti

I guess we might as well call today trade-rumor Tuesday. SportsNet Canada’s Nick Kyperos is reporting that the struggling Anaheim Ducks could be looking to unload their (American!) super-star Bobby Ryan for the right deal. The issue is that they really have no idea what they are looking for in a deal. What’s helping even less is that their is no team that is listed as a potential landing spot for the rights to the winger. The guess is that a trade partner would have to have:

1.) A highly touted prospect

2.) Would be a contender looking for a little extra scoring punch.

A month ago, you might have talked me into the Boston Bruins as a potential spot. They were struggling to get wins and struggling to score goals. It seemed like the only person who wanted to put the puck in the back of the net was Tyler Seguin. The Bruins, in order to not fall flat on their face in the Eastern Conference, might have needed to pull the trigger.

Now? They are on an 11 game point streak and just finished a 10 game winning streak. They sit at second in the Northeast division, a point back of the Toronto Maple Leafs who they begin a home-and-home series with this week. They have a goal differential of +28, the best in the league.

Besides, who would the Boston Bruins even trade? Tuukka Rask? The Ducks don’t need a goalie. Frankly that team just needs to play better.

Bobby Ryan would be fun to have, but it isn’t a necessary or logical move for the Bruins.

Rajon Rondo trade rumors begin again

Posted 2011/11/29 By Benti

The Boston Celtics are open to trading Rajon Rondo

Back before the NBA Lockout began and turned off almost every non-diehard NBA fan in the World, the Boston Celtics were involved in rumors that could have sent All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo to many different places around the NBA. These seem to come up every NBA off-season because Rajon Rondo is the Boston Celtics only real trade-able asset. Since his contract is so low (about $11 million a year) and he is such a talented player, there are many teams, especially the penny pinchers who feel they can contend, who would love to have Rajon Rondo on the roster. When the lockout started, the rumors went away.

Now that the lockout is over (ending), guess what that means? New Rajon Rondo trade rumors! Read the remainder of this entry »
