Letters to two sports figures

Posted 2009/04/26 By Benti

Dear NY Rangers Hockey Club:
Congratulations, you went up 3-1 on a very good Washington Capitals team and have gone on to completely blow it. I can understand you losing game five on the road, those Washington fans really get up for a hockey game, but losing game six at home and by such a large margin? For shame.

I have one request. Please win game seven so that the Bruins don’t have to face the Penguins or the Hurricanes, both much better hockey teams then your hockey team. If you beat Washington then not only does that mean we (should) move onto the Eastern Conference finals, but then New Jersey gets forced into (probably) seven games with Sid and the Penguins making it easier to reach the finals.

Sinceraly,
Bruins Fans

Dear Ben Gordon,
I am sorry to let you know that nobody really likes you, you are just playing out of your mind right now. I regret to inform you that you are not really a viable starter in this league. Sure, you score a crap load of points, but what else do you do? You are a below average passer, a bad rebounder, and an awful defender.

I bring this up because you are currently in a contract year and are about to make way more money then you deserve based on your play against the Celtics. Now you are about to become a highly over payed player this off-season, setting off a chain reaction of “If Ben Gordon got that money then I’m clearly worth twice as much” action that got the league in financial trouble in the first place. So please, before you screw over the league, and possibly knock out the Celtics to boot, stop putting up 40/0/1 lines that look so much better on paper then they really are.

Sincerely,
The NBA

Until Next Time

Bad Start, Good Finish

Posted 2009/04/16 By Benti

Today started with one of the worst possible breaking news stories that any Boston sports fan could have not hoped to happen. This was so bad that it caused me to stop what I was doing in Marketing, and just lean back in my computer chair and cause my Marketing teacher to ask what’s wrong.

Kevin Garnett could miss the entire playoffs.

The first thing I would like to stress is the word “could” which should be substituted with the word(s) “highly unlikely”. Honestly, does any Celtics fan believe that what we were told in February that it was just a strained right knee is the truth? The Celtics pulled the perfect Bill Belichick over us, convincing us that everything would be all right and he would be back in due time. I agree with just about everything Bill Simmons said in his column today on espn.com. You have to keep your guard up, don’t convince the Cavs and the Lakers you have a chink in the armor. You don’t want your best players thinking “We’re screwed” and you don’t want the bench players filling in (Davis, Powe, Moore) that they suddenly have to become KG because frankly they’re not. I also believe that the Celtics have the personally and the attitude to be one of those “Nobody believes in us!” teams like the (I hate saying this) 2007-2008 NY Giants. The loss definitely hurts though.

The good part about today, though, was the Bruins v. Habs game one match-up at The Garden. I had been looking forward to this game all week and I got what I sat on my couch to see. It was, as my dad described it, “old time hockey”. A physical, defensive slug-fest where mistakes cost you goals. I’ll admit, I was nervous when the Habs tied it up, especially the way the Bruins started the third (very badly) , but the late powerplay and 105 slapizoid from the Captain Chara sealed it I had a pretty good feeling from there that we would win that game. The ending stuff was also interesting as well with the near brawl that ensued after the Kessel goal. Saturday night is going to be very physical and a couple of bodies are bound to hit the floor.

The NBA playoffs start Saturday, and the KG’less Celtics will being there title defense Saturday afternoon on the Parquet floor. Later that night, the Bruins will look to take a two game series lead back into Montreal. What I like about this years spring playoffs from a Boston prospective is that the two roles seems to have been flip-flopped. This year, it’s the Bruins who are the favorites in their conference and the Celtics who have to shock the world to reach the finals. Let’s hope the results for this years Celtics are better then last years Bruins and that this years Bruins achieve similar success to last year’s Celtics.

Until Next Time

The NFL schedule was released yesterday and the first thing that has come to every Patriot’s fan mind is how tough the Patriots schedule is. Statistically, it’s the fifth toughest schedule in the NFL (combined 151-105 (.590) in 2008) with games against an improving Falcons team, a more experienced Ravens team (espcially on offense), a Tennesee team that was the #1 seed in the AFC last year, and a game in London. After looking at it again, however, is it really THAT tough?

While we will get a better idea after the draft, we can get an early glimpse of what the season might look like and I really don’t see how it could be that tough.

* – Game time and network subject to possible flexible scheduling adjustment.
** – at Wembley Stadium, London England.

The first thing that pops out to me is this. They play a grand total of 2 road games against teams that were in the Playoffs last year, Indy and Miami. It means most of your tough games are going to be at home. Also, they play one less road game this year as the Tampa Bay game is in London and is a neutral site game. Tennessee lost only one player in the off-season but that loss is huge, both figuratively and literally (Albert Haynesworth). I don’t see the division being too tough, I can’t see Miami having that season again. That leaves me with just a few highlights.

Week 3: Atlanta
Week 4: Baltimore
Week 6: Tennesse
Week 10: @Indy
Week 12: @New Orleans
Week 17: @Houston

Of those I think the week 6 and week 10 games are the toughest (as of now). I really don’t see that as too bad of a schedule, but we still have a ways to go before the start of the season and the draft could cause a real change in how I feel about each game on the schedule.

Until Next Time
